A Closer Look at the Summer Literacy Initiative

The Summer Literacy Initiative is a statewide collaborative effort working with rural faith communities in North Carolina to combat learning loss in their communities through evidence-informed summer literacy programs for rising first through third graders.

The Summer Literacy Initiative currently serves over 25 North Carolina counties and plans to expand! View our current counties, potential expansion counties, and program impact and statistics.

We Don’t Just Prevent Learning Loss, We Accelerate Learning

The Summer Literacy Initiative (SLI) has partnered with the American Institutes for Research (AIR) since 2020 to support evidence-building activities. Over the past five years, AIR has documented and described changes in students’ reading skills, attitudes, and home literacy environments!

Families participating in SLI programs have demonstrated growth in:

Student reading skills

Family reading supports

Student reading confidence

AIR is continuing to partner with the SLI team to analyze state administrative data to understand how SLI students’ growth compares to others in the state.
